David watched through a one-way window into the interrogation room where Eggers sat handcuffed at a table, his face buried in his hands, unmoving.

“His name’s Derrel Eggers,” Lyle said, handing a paper to David. “Although there’s some confusion about that. All his public records say Norman Howard.”

“Hmm.” David continued to study the printout on Eggers. No real job. Permanent address given as a seedy flophouse. Occasional run-ins with the law and long mental ward hospitalizations.

“And the gun, 1930’s Spanish military.” Lyle chuckled. “He could get off on insanity just for pulling the trigger on that thing.”

“I’m going in,” David said.

“Do you need a bad cop? Maybe I could rough him up a bit.”

David shook his head. Of course Lyle wasn’t serious, but sometimes it was hard to tell. “He seems willing to talk.”

“It won’t be of any use. Chief won’t take zombies as evidence.”

“We just do what we can.” David walked around to the door and entered the room, closing the door behind him.

“Mr. Eggers. I’m Lt. David Sheppard.”

Eggers raised his head, sad eyes pale under his brow.

“Do you know why you’re here?” David asked, sitting down across from him.

“I shot a man.” No emotion carried in Egger’s voice, only fatigue.

“Can you tell me about it?”

Eggers shrugged. “He had to die.”

“Why’s that?”

“Zombies.”

David let out a silent sigh. “Tell me about the zombies.”

Eggers stared out at the wall for a good long time. “I was one. Many years ago. They made me do all kinds of things.”

“What kind of things?”

Another pause. “I set fires. Stole trucks. I... I did things--to people.” Eggers leaned low, his face inches from the tabletop.

“Why? How did they make you do that?”

Eggers shook his head, his shoulders quivering. “I just did it. I couldn’t stop. I told myself, Stop, but I couldn’t. My body just did it.”

“How did this happen?”

“They got me. I was just a teenager then. Went to a party, and they grabbed me. Took me out and killed me.”

He sniffled, then heaved a shaking breath. “When I woke up, I was in this other kid’s body. Everything changed. They came around and told me to do things. I did everything, even if it nearly killed me.”

Eggers broke into full sobbing, tears and drool mixing on the table surface. David let him cry. He never did like this part of interrogation, seeing broken people shatter under a mountain of painful memories.

Once Eggers caught his breath, David pushed him again.

“Who is them?”

“Them.” The frail man shrugged. “They didn’t want the casinos.”

“And how did you get free?”

Eggers didn’t answer immediately. He sat, chin bowed to his chest, his shoulders shaking.

“They killed the Zombie Queen. Once she died, I was free. But I wasn’t me anymore.”

“You lived?” David felt silly once he’d asked, but remembered the zombies he’d seen collapse at Corbin’s death. “How was this possible?”

Eggers, oblivious to the question, began to weep anew, and continued to talk through the blubbering. “My family didn’t believe me, and wouldn’t take me back. And Norm’s family thought I was crazy.
